Bioreactor Control System Designed for Single Use and Glass Bioreactors
The PendoTECH Process Control System platform that has been used to control and collect data from scores of systems in critical bioprocess operations has been configured into a bioreactor control system loaded with features including an easy to use graphical user interface (GUI). The system offers the ability to monitor and control the pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and temperature with PID control, and also mixer speed, and weight. Using an embedded transmitter from Mettler-Toledo, an industry standard, for monitoring pH and DO with standard probes, delivers the advanced features and confidence required for measurement and control of the bioreactor.
There is also the ability to use in parallel for strictly monitoring or for process control Presens non-invasive optical pH and DO sensors give the ability to compare old and new technologies or to move to new technology with confidence. Over-pressure of the bioreactor may occur due to a vent filter clogging or other reason and to prevent a vessel failure, pressure monitoring and control is critical. The highly accurate PendoTECH Pressure Sensor (+/- 2% of reading) provides monitoring of the pressure in the head space and if a high pressure alarm is triggered, the system will open the optional pinch valve to relieve pressure and if no change occurs in 10sec will shut off all gases and pumps.
Alarms setpoints are also available for all process parameters and there is an optional air detector on the base pump tubing that can indication is the base container is empty. Other features include a perfusion mode that controls vessel weight by maintaining a user-entered weight setpoint with the media feed pump and a fed-batch mode that allows volumetric addition to be added per a schedule.
A media fill mode can be used to assist in process setup by connecting a high flow pump via an external cable to fill the vessel to a desired weight set point and pre-heat. Process inputs and outputs are represented in the following schematic. |
